TOP TEN TIPS for Reaching Decision Makers

Most JOB Seekers find it difficult--They are finding that you need to overcome more barriers than ever-- to get in front of the right people.  Technology is usually not your friend, here... ubiquitous voicemail has replaced most screening secretaries over the years, so be prepared with your message:  YOU will follow up and call back!  Never expect "the job market" to get back to you.

  • Your reason for calling? You have some important information to give and some clarification would be helpful... JOB Seekers are too easily screened.
  • Who are you with?
  • When IS the best time for you to call back?

If you are finding it difficult to identify and communicate with appropriate hiring authorities, the Careerpilot suggests you consider the following TOP TEN Tips…

  1. Be positive and reflect confidence... Sound as if you SHOULD get through.  Remember to always communicate yourself in a positive, future oriented manner.
  2.   Research, research.... research...Take a look at the company website, as they will often have biographies of key people;     Do a GOOGLE search for SPECIFIC TITLE and COMPANY NAME; they are often mentioned in the company’s annual report;, press releases, Company website, and other places online;
  3. Always pitch to the PA’s when approaching at board level,  as they are often aware of urgent business needs and if you have the right solution they will help you to get air time. If you think that the PA is obstructing you, then call at lunchtime;
  4. Call and ask the receptionist if she could confirm the names of Key people in the organization;
  5. Ask somebody else in the company, receptionist, PA, secretary, administrator, sales person; anybody who will speak to you if they could help you to identify who’s who ... If there is a "no names" policy, or other very restrictive screen, ask if you could be put through to the TITLE and you may get their voice mail revealing their name;
  6. Be prepared to be an information giver, before requesting information;  Vendors and job seekers are easily screened.
  7. Speak clearly and with authority when you ask to be put through to key people--remember, you can't be fired until you've been hired.  An expected call from a colleague is more likely to get through;
  8. Ask for their direct dial number and/or mobile telephone number – you will be surprised how many times these are given out – but, only if you ask;
  9. Call early in the morning as this is a good time to catch key people before the reception is open;
  10. Alternatively, call later in the day after 5 – 5.30 pm.  Again, key people will often still be in the office at this time.
